What is Gauss?

Gauss is a unit of magnetic flux density. It represents the density of the magnetic field at or near the surface of a magnet.

1 Tesla = 10,000 Gauss — measured with a device called a Gaussmeter.

What is Magnet Measurement?

Magnet measurement is the process of verifying a magnet's magnetic field value, pull force, or operating performance. The most common methods include:

  • Gauss measurement (magnetic flux density)
  • Pull force testing

  • Surface area and pole inspection
  • Field effect at working distance
What is Gauss Measurement?

Gauss measurement is the process of measuring the magnetic field value at the surface of a magnet using a Gaussmeter and Hall probe. The measurement point is critical:

  • The surface center and edge give different Gauss readings
  • The value drops rapidly as you move a few mm away from the surface
  • Coatings, plastic housings, or air gaps affect the reading
What Does Surface Gauss Value Mean?

It is the magnetic flux density measured at the surface of the magnet. It is directly related to material grade, geometry, and magnetization direction. However, a high Gauss value does not always mean higher pull force — pull force also depends on surface area, thickness, and air gap.

Is Gauss Value the Same as Pull Force?

No. Gauss value indicates magnetic flux density, while pull force refers to how strongly a magnet holds onto a metal surface. Key factors affecting pull force include: magnet size and grade, thickness of the metal surface, surface roughness, air gap, and pull direction.

How to Use the Calculator?

What Determines the Gauss Value of Neodymium Magnets?

Material grade (N35–N52), diameter or surface area, thickness, magnetization direction, measurement distance, and temperature rating are the key factors. In particular, the thickness-to-diameter ratio has a critical effect on surface flux density.
